Bloomington board commits $5,000 to Safe Step sidewalk repairs in 2026

The Village Board voted Oct. 6 to hire Safe Step Safe Sidewalk Solutions for up to $5,000 to address uneven and hazardous sidewalks in Bloomington in 2026.
Director of Public Works Leitzinger explained that neighboring communities have used the program and that providers typically prioritize the most dangerous sidewalks within a $5,000 commitment; areas with lips too large to grind are recommended for full replacement. McLimans proposed committing $5,000 from the 2026 budget to pilot the program, and trustees approved the expenditure on a motion by McLimans, seconded by Chasity Allen.
Leitzinger will develop a plan identifying sidewalks that could be removed entirely and provide cost estimates for removal. Separately, trustees approved a $1,500 repair for a crack in the sidewalk lip near the Legion building and discussed a $3,075 quote to fix a cracked storm drain at BCN and Pleasant Street. The board also raised the possibility of requiring grease traps at some businesses after a recent sewer blockage and directed McLimans to consult Building Inspector Josh Copsey about code or ordinance remedies.
The Safe Step contract is intended as a targeted approach to improve pedestrian safety; Leitzinger will return recommended locations and an implementation schedule for the program.
