Council reviews NSCDC community-benefit distributions; staff to verify youth-center use

At the July 28 meeting, council members discussed a letter from the Nome Community Center (board president Margaret Thomas) about distribution of the 2024 NSCDC community-benefit share funds.
A staff member listed the allocations discussed: $55,000 to the community center, $65,000 to the preschool association, $20,000 to water sports programming and $10,000 to the Checkpoint Youth Center. The staff member said there were questions about utilization of the youth-center funds and that the city would “run that down” and report back to the council within the week.
The chair confirmed the item had been included previously in the budget and said the allocations had been incorporated during budget consideration. The staff member indicated that if the $10,000 for the youth center is not needed it may free those funds for other purposes and pledged to follow up.
The council did not take formal action on the item during the meeting; staff committed to verifying program usage and returning with an update.
