The Columbus Public Schools Board voted to adopt a trustee-election resolution that would place a mail ballot before electors and to declare a trustee vacancy after a board member's resignation. The superintendent told trustees the change in state law required the resolution and recommended the district use mail ballots because a high share of voters already vote absentee.
Superintendent said the election "will be conducted by mail ballot" and noted the district already sees high mail participation, saying about 60 percent of electors use absentee ballots. Trustees discussed address forwarding issues and the need for voters to update county address records before ballots can be reissued.
On the vacancy, the superintendent recommended advertising the open trustee seat, taking letters of interest and interviewing candidates before the January board meeting; trustees approved advertising the position and a provisional newspaper notice. The superintendent said he would return to the board with interview recommendations if multiple applicants apply.
The board recorded the motions and approved both the election resolution and the process to advertise and fill the vacancy.
