Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate who had been approved at the previous meeting has not responded to outreach and “he is assuming he is no longer interested.” Pernice said the borough’s consortium list contains 32 candidates, and he plans to contact the consortium and the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send letters to candidates.
Pernice told Council he would like to hire two part‑time officers eventually, though the borough has authorization for only one at this time. After the chief described his outreach efforts and next steps, Council agreed to continue the search for one part‑time officer to fill the approved position.
The staffing update came during routine departmental reports; no vote was required. Pernice’s remarks indicate the borough will rely on the civil service process and the consortium list to identify additional candidates before returning with a recommendation or a formal hire.
