Winter Lakes students and staff showcase cosmetology, career-readiness programs

Tiffany Cox, a Winter Lakes High School staff member, told the Coquille SD 8 board about recent student successes and career-focused activities at the alternative campus.
Student speaker Yvette described how Winter Lakes helped her recover credits and find a career path: "If I had to describe Winter Lakes in three words, the first would be understanding. ... The second word I would describe Winter Lakes is motivated. ... The last word is opportunity." She said cosmetology classes and field trips helped her realize she wanted to become an aesthetician and that teachers offered hands-on support.
Cox outlined partnerships and programs that support student experiences, including the TRIO and Aspire programs, Oregon Goes to College Fund grants for trips and overnight visits, and visits to trade and community colleges. She said cosmetology students participated in local events and trade expos and that the school recently applied to become a Pearson testing center so students can take certain credentialing exams on site.
Cox also described a planned student-run nail store, a business-education project where students make and sell decorated acrylic nails; she said the program includes a business plan, business cards and examples available at the back table during the meeting. She invited board members and community volunteers to help with resume-building workshops and mock interviews during the school's college-and-career week on March 9 and 10.
The presentation included photos and descriptions of spirit week activities, career fairs, and overnight site visits. Cox emphasized community volunteer involvement and the role of staff in helping students "exactly where they are" to complete diplomas and obtain career pathways.
The board thanked presenters and had no substantive objections; members moved on to the next agenda item after the spotlight.
