Birmingham Township committee advances Birmingham Hill fence replacement, cites 15% township match for grant

The Birmingham Township Recreation, Parks and Open Space Committee on May 18 advanced a fence-replacement plan for Birmingham Hill and reviewed related safety issues, the committee chair said.
The move centers on replacing damaged split-rail fence sections along Meetinghouse Road in front of the Worth property and addressing tree hazards along the trail. Chair Brian Bonkoski reported he authorized "Brian M." to remove several logs and replace the damaged fence sections and said Cel's Tree Service will be asked to provide a quote to remove large hanging branches, a dead tree covered in poison ivy and a large ash tree that “appears to be mostly dead.”
Committee members discussed funding for the work as part of a grant application. Secretary Melissa Urbany told the committee that the Board of Supervisors has approved the township’s commitment to provide the required 15% matching funds for the Birmingham Hill fence-replacement grant. The committee reviewed outstanding application requirements including project description and cost estimates; Mark Roman agreed to forward his contribution of grant materials to Urbany so the application could be finalized and submitted before the end-of-month deadline.
The committee also inspected Sandy Hollow and noted that one of the top rails on a recently installed fence appears to be missing. Because the replacement fence uses a different rail profile than the traditional split-rail design, Bonkoski said he will contact J&A Fence to determine whether leftover replacement materials are still available.
On procedural matters the committee approved the April 20, 2026 meeting minutes (Mark Roman moved; Dave Miersch seconded; vote counts not specified) and set its next meeting for Monday, June 15, 2026. Doreen O'Neill moved to adjourn; Mark Roman seconded and the motion carried.
The next steps for the Birmingham Hill project are to obtain tree-removal quotes from Cel's Tree Service, finalize cost estimates, and submit the grant application with the township's 15% match before the end-of-month deadline.
