Organizers of the Route 16 Rally & Music Festival presented a post-event recap and a funding/approval request for 2027, describing fast growth in visitor counts, sponsorships and regional publicity. Organizers said their goal for 2027 is to double attendance and convert the event into a multi-day destination that would increase hotel nights and restaurant sales.
They told the council that 2026 garnered an estimated 8,000 visitors based on traffic counters and that the town's investment helped buy advertising and signboards that put Tazewell on the regional map. Organizers asked for additional town funding to invest earlier in regional marketing, wayfinding signage, parking and expanded entertainment.
Council debate focused on operational issues: the requested footprint included Main Street closures beginning Friday at 11 a.m., but county courthouse schedules and access for citizens using county services raised objections; members also cited a nearly $19,000 estimated overtime/equipment cost for town public-safety and maintenance staffing. Several council members recommended more lead time for planning, a stronger volunteer training plan for traffic and street closure management, and clearer cost-sharing commitments from regional partners.
A motion to accept the event application was moved and seconded. After extended discussion the council did not record the necessary affirmative majority for approval and the application as presented was not accepted; councilmembers asked organizers and staff to reconvene, revise the application footprint and hours, and return with a refined plan and additional documentation for training and county coordination.
