Local delegate Shannon Lee describes Girls State experience to Manteno finance committee

At the July 20 finance meeting, high‑school student Shannon Lee told trustees she represented the Manteno Women's Auxiliary at Eastern Illinois University's 2026 Girls State, describing mock government exercises, elections and leadership lessons that she said strengthened her public‑speaking and civic skills.
Shannon Lee thanked the American Legion Auxiliary and the village for sponsoring her to attend the 2026 Girls State program at Eastern Illinois University and described the week as "much more than" classroom learning. She told the finance committee that participants built their own cities, counties and state government, campaigned for office, debated issues and held elections, giving her a new appreciation for public service.
Shannon said the program improved her confidence in public speaking and teamwork and will be useful as she pursues a potential application to West Point. She said the experience "reminded me that every vote matters and our participation as citizen[s] truly makes a difference." Trustee Sandy introduced Shannon and encouraged residents to share the speech and photos posted to the American Legion auxiliary's Facebook page.
Shannon's remarks took place during the public‑participation portion of the finance meeting and did not prompt a committee action; trustees thanked her for the presentation and encouraged youth civic engagement.
