Vallivue School Board votes to place $7 million supplemental levy on May ballot

The Vallivue School District Board voted 4–0 on Feb. 11 to set a $7 million supplemental levy for two years and to place the measure on the May ballot, district officials said.
Assistant Superintendent Joey Palmer told the board the proposed levy would fund a range of recurring needs, including $3,500,000 for certified and classified salaries and benefits; $1,250,000 for teachers, paraprofessionals, health and safety personnel and technology; $1,000,000 for transportation; $750,000 for district‑wide enhancement programs such as AVID, gifted and talented, athletics, band and choir; and $500,000 for classroom curriculum. Palmer said the levy package totals $7 million and that, if not renewed, the district would need to make roughly $7 million in budget cuts.
Trustee Paul Tierney moved to approve the levy amount; Trustee Jennifer Cox seconded and the motion carried 4–0. Trustee Jennifer Cox later moved to place the levy on the May ballot; Trustee Amy Johnson seconded and that motion also carried 4–0.
Palmer also told the board the district is monitoring pending legislation that could extend supplemental levy renewal periods from two years to six years, but he said that change has not passed and the district will proceed under current law.
The board’s action authorizes district staff to present proposed ballot language at the March board meeting and to proceed with placing the question before voters in May. No public comments were recorded on the levy at the meeting.
