The Smyth County Board of Supervisors on June 11 recommended scheduling a July 9 public hearing to consider a proposed ordinance that would create Emergency Services Volunteer Agency Tax Relief for qualifying volunteers.
County Administrator Shawn Utt explained the ordinance framework, which staff said mirrors Tazewell County’s approach and would allow a maximum $300 tax credit per eligible volunteer. The proposed eligibility standard requires participating volunteers to meet at least 25% of annual calls, trainings or departmental activities; Assistant County Administrator – Development Clegg Williams suggested clarifying that the standard applies over the entire calendar year and the committee agreed.
The Public Safety Advisory Committee and staff discussed complementary recruitment and retention incentives in a countywide public safety standards model. The Ordinance committee will consider the proposed code language and the board will hold a public hearing on July 9 at 5:00 p.m. before any final action.
