Minto council discusses raising city sales tax in 2026 to help fund water upgrade

During the Jan. 13 meeting, Mrs. Shutt told the council she was exploring whether to raise the city sales tax in 2026 to help fund Minto’s portion of a regional water-treatment upgrade. She noted the current city sales tax is 1% and that any increase must be placed before voters on the ballot.
Mrs. Shutt and City Attorney Samantha Onstad will look into the legal and procedural steps required to put a city sales-tax measure before voters in 2026. The council expressed interest in the concept but made no decision at the Jan. 13 meeting; any proposal would return for formal consideration and, if approved by the council for placement, would appear to voters on the ballot.
The sales-tax discussion was raised in the context of financing options for the Walsh Regional Water Supply & Treatment Plant upgrade; the council had earlier authorized staff to pursue technical follow-up on the upgrade. There was no vote on tax policy at the Jan. 13 meeting.
