Library presenter outlines plan to use $1,000,000 donation for renovations and makerspace expansion

A presenter for the library said the board has decided to spend a $1,000,000 donation on a package of minor renovations aimed at expanding the makerspace, adding study and meeting rooms and reducing noise in the teen area.

The presenter said the work follows the library’s recent strategic plan and a vendor-led space-needs assessment that included public meetings and statistical analysis. "One of the things we heard... was just kind of about our available space," the presenter said, noting the assessment shaped the priorities for the renovation.

The library plans to enlarge the makerspace, which the presenter said has seen "probably a 139% growth over the last couple years," creating tighter work space. The renovation will create more room and workstations so users can "actually get in here and find a place to work and get work done," the presenter added.

On the teen area, the presenter said existing curved walls allow sound to spill out; the renovation will square off that space, add a door that can be closed when needed and install noise-dampening materials to reduce disruption to other parts of the facility.

The presenter said the library currently has one study room and expects to have five or six total after renovations, depending on how some spaces are ultimately configured. "People are always looking for quiet places that they can sit down and just do some work," the presenter said.
