Residents and Chamber ask council for fee relief, community events; question Ziply Fiber agenda status

Several members of the public addressed the council during the public-comment period. Swapnil Badkvr asked the council to consider reducing city application and permit fees to help open Giggle Grove Day Care on Glencoe Road in North Plains.
Cindy Hirst, secretary of the North Plains Chamber of Commerce, updated the council on local outreach efforts and announced a grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new Pacific Dog Park on Sept. 7, 2024, at 1 p.m. She thanked volunteers including Jewett Cameron and Eagle Scout candidate Jack Pitner for work on the park, said the Chamber would like to hold a grand opening for the new Public Works building when finished and asked whether the city could help fund a public party celebrating new murals on Oregon Canadian Forest Products’ buildings on Commercial Street.
Travis Robicheaux, attending via Zoom, said he believed Ziply Fiber was to be discussed at the meeting; Finance Director Bill Reid said the city has not yet adopted a new franchise licensing and fee process and therefore the Ziply topic was not placed on the Sept. 3 agenda.
The minutes do not record any commitments by the council to grant fee relief or city funding for Chamber events; those requests will require follow-up by staff and council action to be realized.
