PSAP hears about over $3 million congressional spending request for WISCOM; director recommends local workgroup

During the Jan. 20 Ashland-Bayfield Consolidated PSAP Board meeting, Director Meagan Quaderer briefed members on a congressional spending request of more than $3 million for Ashland County for WISCOM radio towers, new radios and an emergency response trailer.
Ashland County Administrator Dan Grady told the board the funding is included in an appropriations bill that has passed both chambers of Congress and been sent to the president; he said he expects contact from Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s office regarding next steps. Quaderer explained that local law enforcement currently uses four legacy analog towers and that WISCOM would consolidate communications onto a single talk group and channel, simplifying dispatcher monitoring from multiple channels to one.
Quaderer recommended forming an Ashland County workgroup to coordinate implementation of WISCOM. Mark Abeles-Allison asked that a resolution of appreciation and thanks be placed on a future agenda; the board did not take a formal vote on the workgroup at the Jan. 20 meeting.
The board will revisit federal funding and implementation planning at future meetings; the next scheduled meeting is 1 p.m. March 17, 2026 in Ashland County with a virtual option.
