Bayfield County weighs a rapid-response EMT pool rather than county-run ambulances

Bayfield County officials discussed a countywide EMS proposal at the Sheriff’s Committee meeting on Feb. 16 that would create regional support for local services.
EMS Coordinator Bryan Ziemann said he is working with service directors on a detailed proposal due by the end of the first quarter and described two options: a preferred option creating a pool of rapid-response EMTs cross-credentialed with local services to assist first response, and a second option to create a basic life-support (BLS) transporting service. Ziemann emphasized that neither proposal is intended to replace local EMS services but rather to serve as a safety net.
Mason EMS representative Joe Schick said he prefers the rapid-response pool because it is cheaper and more scalable; he recommended evaluating a transporting vehicle only after the program has run for a year. Schick and others said the county needs to recruit EMT-Bs, post applications beyond county lines and offer competitive pay in order to hire and retain personnel. Supervisor Dennis Pocernich said he thought the rapid-response model was the best option.
Meagan Quaderer said she wants the county board to evaluate the EMS study performed by Mission Critical Partners. Ziemann said the proposal details will be delivered to service directors and the board for evaluation; no formal action or vote occurred at the meeting.
