Committee hears multiple Public Works and Parks updates including streetlight repairs, sanitary projects, park partnerships and Route 66 parade idea

Public Works Director Dan Gummersheimer and Parks staff reported on signal controller repairs on McKnight Road, planned MSD sanitary projects, a temporary parking-lot grading project, a resident survey on solar streetlights, and park partnerships including an Urban Chestnut pop-up biergarten and pursuit of Bird City Missouri designation.
Public Works Director Dan Gummersheimer and Planning and Parks staff provided multiple operational and program updates to the Brentwood Public Works Committee at its June 9 meeting.
Gummersheimer said a failed modem on the Brentwood-side McKnight Road controller was replaced and operations were restored around May 22, 2026. He listed additional streetlight work on Manchester Road where a replacement control cabinet should arrive in June and four north-side streetlights near the former Circle K are operational; two damaged poles were shipped for electrician installation in June. He also reported sidewalk and driveway repairs at 8837 White Avenue that raised the lowest point about six inches to reduce pooling, grading and runoff work at the temporary parking lot on the north side of Manchester Road, and a downed tree on Salem that caused downed wires and street lights which have been reported.
On regional sewer projects, staff said the Hampton Creek Sanitary Relief project will impact Black Creek north of Manchester Road with construction anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027, and that Bates Utility Company is ready to begin the Webster Groves Trunk Sanitary Relief Phase 2 MSD project though a start date is not yet known.
Planning Director Whitney Kelly provided building-division metrics for May (55 new code enforcement cases; 210 building permits received in May; 978 inspections for the month) and updates on the 8815 Madge townhome site-plan review, contractor registrations, the Ladue Quarry project and the upcoming Architectural Review Board agenda. She said the RFP for a nuisance-abatement contractor was posted May 21 with responses due June 15.
Parks staff described a proposed parking collaboration with the Movement Center to allow up to five Movement Center staff vehicles to use Hanley Park parking Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–3 p.m., with staff drafting a memorandum of understanding following committee consensus to proceed. Parks staff also said the city has begun the process to pursue Bird City Missouri designation and proposed adjusting the Brentwood Days parade route to feature Carl’s Drive-In to mark Route 66’s centennial in 2026. Staff reported that Urban Chestnut proposed a series of pop-up "Der Biergarten" events in Brentwood Park every Wednesday in July from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the proposal includes a $100 fee under the food truck policy and a Brentwood Park beer tap handle with 10% of proceeds donated to the Brentwood Park Maintenance and Liquidity Fund; staff gained consensus to proceed and discussed a possible August extension.
On neighborhood lighting, staff reported the results of a resident survey on Mari Kay Court (5 in favor, 3 opposed) and Douglas Court (18 in favor, 2 opposed) regarding solar streetlights; staff will research comparable light styles and vendor quotes and return to the committee next month.
The committee approved the consent agenda and had no public comments before adjourning at 7:09 p.m.
