Mansfield Commission on Aging outlines summer programs, grant plans and public outreach

The Mansfield Commission on Aging on June 8 reviewed a slate of upcoming programs for older residents and set steps for public engagement as it prepares recommendations for the Town Council this fall.
Jessica St. Louis, director of Human Services, told the commission that the Farms to Families program is still accepting applications but this is the last week to apply, and that the program’s eligibility guidelines are posted online and follow the ALICE threshold. She said Human Services is also taking applications and donations for the Back to School program; two EO Smith students are organizing a supply drive and an Amazon wish list will be available for donations.
Jessica Tracy, senior center supervisor, reported the Juniper Hill Village meal-delivery program began last week and is delivering about 15 meals Tuesday through Thursday. Tracy also outlined cultural and safety programming: the Armchair Travel series is featuring Thailand this month; a Driving at Night workshop is scheduled for Tuesday; and an AARP/occupational-therapist program in the fall will help residents adapt vehicles for safer driving.
Tracy said the Senior Center has applied for a CT Humanities Quick Grant to bring two evening programs presented by the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture in July and August and to host a daytime Dementia Friendly program in September.
The commission agreed to pursue public input as it finalizes future goals. Members will take part in the Senior Resources Fair on Sept. 11, where the commission will run a public survey, and will hold an open forum after the September COA meeting to gather additional comments for the report that will go to the Town Council in the fall.
The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m.
