At the July meeting the superintendent recommended the board authorize a Memorandum of Understanding with the TREX tax-refund collection service to help the district recover unpaid individual obligations such as cafeteria fees.
The superintendent explained that TREX intercepts an individual’s tax refund to collect outstanding balances and returns the remainder to the taxpayer; the program applies to individual refunds only and imposes a minimal fee only when funds are collected. "This is an opportunity for the school to be able to collect some of the outstanding fees that come in," the superintendent said.
A board member moved to authorize the superintendent to enter the MOU; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The superintendent said the agreement would give the district an additional collection option while acknowledging it may be used infrequently.
Board members asked whether the district would be notified when TREX pursues a collection; the superintendent said the board could require notification or receive quarterly summaries if it prefers.
