The Parks and Community Services Committee spent a major portion of its March 19 meeting finalizing logistics for the city'wide "12 Days" community events, including EcoFest, volunteer cleanups and a street fair.
"The 1st day on the 11th is the the county should have the open house from 12 to 3," the Chair said while reviewing the schedule. Committee members described multiple activities across the 12-day program: school presentations, an EcoFest open house, a litter cleanup, a street fair and parade, and a final tree-planting at Kennedy Beach Academy.
Betty, who coordinates volunteer programming, said the committee plans to "honor the Ecola Kids for their service" during the Whale Park dedication and described borrowing four tents for EcoFest that could be held in reserve for the street fair. She also reported that Pacific Tower will cover most costs for the shred event and that the city will pick up remaining expenses.
Safety and vendor questions drew particular attention. Members discussed a Recology suggestion that a miniature trash truck follow at the back of the parade to serve as a buffer; the committee asked staff to consult Recology and local police about the idea. The committee also asked staff to confirm whether Malia's Grill could sell food at the EcoFest; Betty said Malia has a business license and vendor experience, but staff said they would verify permitting and report back.
Committee members agreed to finalize invitations, confirm site plans and ask groups to provide tables and chairs where possible to reduce logistical burden. Les (communications) said he would update promotional posters once details were confirmed.
