The Soda Springs Planning and Zoning Commission voted on Sept. 9 to recommend that a 12.84-acre parcel (parcel number 010000121300) be rezoned from R-2 to neighborhood commercial C-1 and forwarded the recommendation to the City Council for a final decision.
Commissioners debated whether C-1 or C-2 better fit the comprehensive plan and neighborhood character after public comment from adjacent property owners who expressed concern about how rezoning might affect their land. A representative of the cemetery board said he was worried about the property owner's plans if the zoning changed. Engineer Alan Skinner explained current zoning and potential changes; Commissioners discussed avoiding an 'island' of commercial zoning surrounded by residential lots. Vice Chairman Lori Anne Lau moved to recommend C-1 zoning; Commissioner Stephen Simmons seconded and the commission voted in favor.
No written responses to the rezoning were filed with the commission; the property owner left the choice between C-1 and C-2 to the board. The commission's recommendation is advisory and will be sent to the City Council, which has the authority to adopt, modify or reject the rezoning. The minutes record public input closed at 6:30 p.m.
