Snake River trustees adopt multiple policy updates reflecting new state laws

The Snake River Board of Trustees approved second readings and adopted multiple policy updates recommended by the Idaho School Boards Association at its Oct. 16 meeting.
The changes reflect several state laws enacted this year. The board approved updates to Policy 2320 (Health Enhancement Education), which incorporates changes prompted by SB 1308 and HB 666 about how adoption is discussed alongside sex education and restrictions on materials from abortion providers. The board also approved the renumbered parental opt‑out form (2320F), revisions to Policy 2340 to move sex‑education material into 2320, and updates to Policy 2415 to align dyslexia-related screening exemptions with HB 566.
Trustees approved Policy 3297 (Names, Pronouns, and Titles), updated after HB 538, which limits school requirements related to pronoun and title usage and requires parent permission before staff use a nonlegal name or nontraditional pronouns for a student. The board adopted Policy 3440 to reflect that programs offered for a fee may be paid through the Empowering Parents Grant Program and clarified fee‑related limitations. Policy 3523 (Head Lice) was updated to emphasize parent consent before checks, reflecting SB 1329; Policy 5470 (Leaves of Absence, Military Leave) was updated largely in response to HB 580. Policy 7260 now permits debit or credit card expenditures for student activity funds (HB 450), and Policy 7408 adds transparency duties for professional service contracts per SB 1303.
A motion by Larin Mortimer, seconded by Carol Hepworth, carried the approvals unanimously (vote recorded 5–0). The board also approved the deletion/renumbering of the former Policy 2340F to 2320F to align with the Health Enhancement Education policy.
