MSU students urge Bozeman School District to adopt climate literacy initiative

Two Montana State University students used the public‑comment period to press the Bozeman School District to adopt a district‑wide climate literacy and action initiative.
Margaret Bastian, a junior in political science, told the board that warmer, less predictable winters are harming wildlife and urged local curricular and hands‑on responses. “What I think you guys can do is I would like the school district to create a local climate and wildlife education initiative,” she said, recommending partnerships with MSU and local wildlife agencies, student projects and community outreach.
Charlie Palm, also an MSU student and Bozeman resident, asked the district to integrate climate education into science and social‑studies courses rather than adding separate classes, and to provide teacher training and student opportunities such as energy audits, gardens and community partnerships. He also suggested forming a climate education advisory committee and seeking EPA environmental education grants and MSU support.
Trustees acknowledged the requests during the meeting; staff did not announce any immediate curricular changes at this session. The public comments put climate literacy on the board’s record and asked the district to pursue partnerships and funding to support districtwide implementation.
