Commission members finalized plans on July 13 for Parker’s Back-to-School Bash scheduled for July 26, confirming that 552 backpacks were ordered with IDA grant funds and will be delivered the Monday before the event.
Speaker 1, who is coordinating the event logistics, said the backpacks are in hand and that Zach arranged hot dogs and condiments through the Elks. Probation staff committed to provide 125 additional backpacks, and the Chamber pledged six cases of water. Vendor confirmations include soccer, football, crepe rec, VFW and La Paz organizations; some vendors declined (wrestling will be at a tournament). The Parker Pioneer will attend to photograph the event.
Commissioners discussed distribution logistics and agreed this year will emphasize distributing backpacks rather than pre-filling them with school supplies; filling backpacks would have pushed costs “by the thousands,” according to meeting discussion. EWS committed to bring water bottles; Walmart indicated it did not have a large enough shipment for backpacks but might provide supplies.
Committee members suggested holding a ribbon-cutting or family-oriented grand opening for the new basketball court around the same time and asked staff to propose dates; staff said APS (the primary funder for the court) should be involved in sign and event planning.
No formal votes were taken on the event. Staff and volunteers will proceed with confirmed orders and logistics and will continue outreach to vendors and partner organizations.
