Woolwich to apply for LEAP grant to study regional professional fire company amid volunteer shortfalls

On May 19 the Woolwich Township Committee unanimously approved R-2025-138 to authorize application for a Local Efficiency Achievement Program (LEAP) Challenge Grant to study the feasibility of a regional professional fire company.
Committeeman Frederick pressed for additional contract details and questioned the absence of a 'not to exceed' clause in the application-authorizing resolution. Mayor Matthias and staff clarified that the resolution only authorizes submitting the grant application and that participating municipalities would adopt corresponding resolutions as the project advances.
Committee members also noted the Woolwich Fire Company’s monthly report had been submitted but company representatives were not present; Mayor Matthias said five recent fire calls went unanswered due to lack of volunteers. The proposed LEAP study is intended to assess regional options and efficiencies; the application passed on a 5-0 vote.
