The Milton-Freewater City Council voted unanimously June 12 to offer the city manager position to Nicole Schneider, contingent on a successful background check.
Councilor Steve Irving moved to offer the position and Councilor John Lyon seconded; all five members present — Mayor Mike Odman and Councilors John Lyon, Wes Koklich, Destiny Jensen and Steve Irving — voted in favor. Councilor Jose Garcia was absent and the Ward 2 seat remains vacant.
Councilor John Lyon also moved to set Schneider’s starting salary at $150,000 with a six-month review for possible increase; Councilor Destiny Jensen seconded that motion, which passed unanimously. The council then directed the City Attorney to draft a city manager contract; that motion was moved by Lyon and seconded by Jensen and passed without opposition.
Council members reached a consensus that city staff should help coordinate any information the City Attorney may need to draft the contract. Mayor Mike Odman attempted to reach Nicole Schneider by phone to extend the offer during the meeting but was unable to make contact.
The special session convened immediately after an executive session at 6:54 p.m. in the Albee Room of the City Library and was adjourned at 7:05 p.m. No members of the public attended; representatives of the Valley Herald and the East Oregonian were present.
