Board approves PIR matrix and expanded site-based professional development

The Bozeman School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the district's PIR (professional in-service) matrix, endorsing a shift to more site-specific professional development, expanded mentoring for new teachers and optional flex days. The motion to accept the superintendent's recommendation was made by Trustee Sandy Wilson and seconded by Trustee Berthelsen; the board voted 7–0 in favor.

Casey, who led the presentation on the PIR matrix, said the district has moved from one-size-fits-all trainings to site-led plans that align with each school's long-range strategic goals. "New teachers come to our district earlier than everyone else and do orientation," Casey said, and mentors and mentees earn continuing-education units for participation. Casey said the district paired new teachers with veteran mentors and emphasized curriculum, technology and where staff can find resources.

The presentation outlined components including new-teacher orientation, optional flex days for voluntary professional learning, a dedicated second-year contract day focused on trauma-informed practices, and expanded supports for non-tenured teachers such as suicide-prevention training and Indian Education for All compliance. Trustees asked clarifying questions about CEU credit, evaluation frequency and how the matrix allows local sites to determine specific learning objectives.

Trustee Sandy Wilson said she supported the plan, calling it "really focused on the teachers' individual needs, staff needs, building needs, and then school-wide district goals." The board filed no amendments and approved the item as presented.

The board next moved on to related LRSP items and staffing reports; the meeting adjourned after approval of the district's five-year plan items.
