Roanoke Rapids’ City Manager briefed the council on upcoming events, staffing and operational preparations and said the city will publicly announce a new police chief at noon the following day.
The manager told the council the HCIA meeting scheduled for Hopgood was canceled for the following night and moved to March 26. He reminded members of a strategic-planning and economic-development workshop on Feb. 19 at Hayes Group Consulting and a Chamber of Commerce 75th-anniversary event on Feb. 22. He said a state youth baseball tournament will be held June 26–29 at Ledgerwood Ball Fields and is expected to bring thousands of visitors; staff are preparing fields and facilities.
On operations, the manager said Public Works is treating streets in anticipation of possible precipitation and reviewed the department’s response to a Jan. 10 storm, including brine application volumes. He also said the city will "publicly release tomorrow at 12 noon the announcement of our new Police Chief." (City Manager, speaker 4).
In a later finance update, Miss Johnson said the city’s year-to-date receipts are about $11,700,000 and year-to-date expenditures about $9,600,000, leaving revenues ahead by roughly $2,000,000. She clarified the numbers as millions after a misstatement. Council discussed accumulated interest on investments, noting about $300,000 in interest mentioned by the Chair; the finance director said those funds roll into fund balance unless council acts.
The meeting concluded with routine motions and adjournment.
