Myrtle Point SD 41 board approves audit, accepts seismic grant and adopts health curriculum

At its May meeting, the Myrtle Point SD 41 school board approved the district's 2023'24 audit, accepted a seismic rehabilitation grant and adopted policy JFE and the 9'12 health curriculum.
Lee, the district's budget lead, told the board the audit showed the district's net position rose by about $300,000 from the prior year and that liabilities increased partly because the district added a bus lease. "Our net position increased by $300,000 from the previous year," Lee said, noting three nonmonetary findings in the audit related to grants and a general ledger timing issue.
Steve, the superintendent, said the board will formally accept the seismic grant and begin procurement work: sign the grant paperwork, hire ZCS (an architects and engineering firm from Grants Pass) to prepare required requests for proposals because the project will exceed the $50,000 threshold, post RFPs for at least 30 days, and aim to select contractors by mid'October so exterior work could start the following spring. "We received the seismic grant," Steve said, and outlined a timeline that targets starting exterior work in late May so the district can "start school on time in the fall of 2026," depending on contractor schedules.
On curriculum and policy, the board completed second readings of policies JFE, VBN and JVA/GBN and voted to adopt JFE. Board member (S5) moved to adopt the district's 9'12 health curriculum; the board approved the adoption by voice vote. A board member noted the health curriculum is already available at the high school and posted on the district website.
The board approved a leave of absence request under Article 24 (sections A and C) of the MPEA collective bargaining agreement after Board member (S5) moved the motion and Steve seconded it. The board also approved a revised 2024'25 calendar that makes the last day of school a two'hour early release to allow staff checkout and grade'level activities; Steve said the district will notify families and local media about the change.

Chair (S1) closed the meeting with thanks to staff and volunteers; a second budget meeting is scheduled for May 19.
