North Lake board votes to join county equity-committee consortium

The North Lake School Board voted Wednesday night to join a countywide equity‑committee consortium that state guidance allows rural districts to form in lieu of each district creating its own separate equity committee. The motion to join was made by a board member and seconded; the board approved the motion without recorded opposition.

The superintendent and an ESD representative, Louie, described the consortium as a way for multiple rural and remote districts to meet state equity‑committee requirements without each board recruiting five additional members. “They have allowed, as part of it, to come as a consortium and put together a committee for a consortium for rural remote districts,” Louie said, noting the consortium would reduce the burden on small boards.

Supporters said the consortium would ease volunteer recruitment and administrative workload. The superintendent told the board staff would return a draft proposal for review in November and that the ESD would collect districts that sign on before final approvals. The ESD representative said the initiative needs to be in place by September 2025.

Opponents were not recorded on the motion. Board members asked that the district’s representative on the ESD board be confirmed in time for the ESD’s March meeting so votes on required budget items and service plans can proceed on schedule.

The board carried the motion to join. Next steps: the board will nominate an ESD representative (a registered‑voter requirement was discussed elsewhere in the meeting), and the superintendent said the district will review and finalize its decision at the next board meeting if additional details are needed.
