Milton-Freewater Library Board approves minutes, previews budget and launches Kanopy ahead of summer reading

The Milton-Freewater Library Board met May 28 in the Monahan Room of the Milton-Freewater Public Library and approved the minutes from the March meeting before turning to operational updates.
Library Director Lili Schmidt told board members the City budget, which includes the library’s pending budget, is scheduled for a City Council vote on June 8. Schmidt said copies of the pending library budget were provided to each board member and that neither the council nor the Budget Committee raised concerns; she said no changes are expected at the adoption hearing.
The board recorded the approval of prior minutes: “Minutes from 3.36.2026 meeting were approved with a motion from Board Member Estes and all were in favor. Motion passed.” Board Member Laurel Estes is listed as the mover; a second was not specified in the minutes.
Schmidt also announced the library has activated Kanopy, a streaming service for patrons. The minutes note staff are promoting registration to every patron and record her remark: "It's easy to register and it's easy to use." The board recorded that staff will continue to provide instructions to patrons who ask for help.
On programming, Schmidt outlined the library’s Summer Reading program, which begins June 9 and serves children (0–12), teens (12–17) and adults (18+). The minutes state staff prepared materials and goody bags sized for about 300 children, 100 teens and 150 adults; the goody bags include program information, some treats and toys for children.
The board was also briefed on city management changes: Interim City Manager Tim Johnson is scheduled to leave June 1, and the City Council will interview candidates for a new city manager in the coming weeks, the minutes say.
The next board meetings were set for July 23 and September 24 at 4 p.m. in the Monahan Room. The meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
