Students tell board Washington, D.C., trip ‘opened my eyes’

Students who took a school-sponsored trip to Washington, D.C., told the Myrtle Point SD 41 board on April 14 that the experience broadened their understanding of history and government.
"This trip opened my eyes to just how big and small the world truly is," said a student (S6), describing visits to memorials and museums and the chance to meet peers from other regions. Cash Miller, a student who addressed the board, said, "To me, the DC trip was really cool because I'm a guy who loves history," and singled out the Vietnam Memorial, the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
A teacher and trip chaperone (S4) said the hands-on experience is "priceless," allowing students to "smell the air and interact with the monuments" in ways classroom lessons cannot replicate. Board members, including S10 and S12, thanked the students and teachers and urged continuation of the program, noting its value for student leadership and civic learning.
The presentation included references to the students' interest in architecture and history and to extracurricular benefits such as increased scholarship and community connections. The board noted no formal action was required and moved on after expressing appreciation for the teachers who chaperoned the trip.
The student presentations took place during the recognition of visitors portion of the meeting; the district said it will look to plan future trips and consider earlier fundraising timelines to ease logistical pressure.
