K–5 literacy update: district uses Acadian benchmarks, daily 90-minute reading block and targeted intervention

Cam Kyle (S5) told the Monroe SD 1J board that the district’s K–5 literacy program uses Acadian benchmark assessments (formerly DIBELS) to track student progress and guide instruction.
"The data you're looking at on the front page is our benchmark data," Cam Kyle said, describing spring (end-of-year) and fall comparisons and noting that third-, fourth- and fifth-grade performance on Acadian often outpaced state testing. Kyle described a protected 90-minute block of core reading instruction for K–5 and a daily 30-minute targeted support period called a reading academy for students who need intervention. "We want all of our kids meeting benchmarks," Kyle said, pointing to growth in some grades and the district's use of WestEd consultants and a literacy coach to help teachers refine instruction.
Board members asked for timing of the next benchmarking window; Kyle said the next formal reporting will be in January, and offered to return with an update on scores. The presentation emphasized vertical alignment of curriculum, use of progress monitoring every six weeks for students in intervention, and teacher professional learning communities that review short-cycle data to make group shifts.
The board did not take any vote on the presentation; members thanked the presenter and moved on to other agenda items.
