Committee backs bill to streamline ID fingerprint checks for consolidated state IT employees

Alberto Gonzales, administrator for the governor's Office of Information Technology Services, told the committee HB 277 is a technical bill to streamline fingerprint criminal background checks across more than 50 consolidated agencies. Gonzales said the change would allow the consolidated IT office to require a single FBI fingerprint background check rather than up to a dozen separate fingerprint checks previously required by individual agencies.
Committee members raised no substantive objections in the hearing and the bill was sent to the Senate floor with a do‑pass recommendation by voice vote. Gonzales said the provision is intended to save time and money and reduce duplicative processes created during the 2018 consolidation of IT services.
