Council pauses town-owned rezoning and schedules neighborhood meeting

At the July 20 meeting the council opened a public hearing on a proposal to rezone three town-owned parcels (totaling about 143 acres) from residential categories to Public Facilities. Planner Lori Bryant described Parcel 3’s intended role in a future Southwest Public Safety Center, said Parcel 2 had been recently annexed and recommended future land-use designations for staff review, and noted staff’s recommendation for two separate motions for the three parcels.
Several residents urged more engagement and asked for a neighborhood meeting so adjacent homeowners could review proposed uses and future access. ‘‘If you do that, I'm wondering how we would be notified,’’ asked David Williams, a nearby property owner. Staff and council confirmed the town can hold and notice a neighborhood meeting and that the council may continue the hearing to a date certain without re-advertisement. The council voted to continue the item to August 17 to allow time for the neighborhood meeting and broader outreach.
Councilmembers and staff said the continuance would allow additional public input and time to consider attachments such as conceptual park designs, connectivity and potential conditions before any rezoning vote is taken.
