Freeport council unanimously renews Axon Taser agreement for police

The Freeport City Council voted unanimously on July 20 to renew the city’s agreement to continue using Axon Taser devices for the police department.
Police Chief Howe told the council the department has used Axon products for about 15 years and that the current model is "no longer being serviced," though cartridges and batteries remain available. Chief Howe said the renewal would allow the department to move into a newer model now and "evaluate that again in 5 to 6 years."
Councilman McDonald moved to approve continuation of the Axon Taser agreement; Councilwoman Morales seconded the motion. The council approved the item by voice vote.
Supporters framed the renewal as a routine equipment and officer-safety decision; no amendments or additional funding requests were discussed during the public meeting. The council did not provide a roll-call vote in the record; the chair announced the motion carried unanimously.
The council did not set a public follow-up date but Chief Howe said the department would reassess service and equipment needs on the five- to six-year timeline mentioned at the meeting.
