The Selma Appearance Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness July 20 for exterior changes at 101 East Railroad Street that staff said will protect the building from water damage and preserve character.
Applicant Gina Tate described chronic water intrusion from a neighboring building and said a gutter routed to the front of the building would divert water away from the foundation and help preserve the structure. “If we put a gutter to eliminate the water from hitting the foundation as much as it does, it would help save the building,” Tate said.
Staff reviewed proposed changes including a blade sign that projects from the façade, replacing the front‑door screen and repairing door framing, and matching brickwork around an AC unit. Staff also presented Secretary of the Interior guidance noting that properly integrated gutters can be consistent with preservation goals by preventing water damage.
Commissioners accepted the evidence, found the proposed materials and changes compatible with district character, and approved the COA (motion by Miss Smith; second by Miss Rainer). The presiding officer was authorized to sign the final order.
