SLPS reports developer interest in surplus schools and a neighborhood group asks to steward land behind Clay School

Staff reported thousands of impressions and more than 2,300 direct inquiries for surplus school properties, active tours and developer outreach; community member Deneen Vaughn asked the district to transfer or allow stewardship of a vacant lot behind Clay School for community use, and staff said the parcel request will be considered and would not automatically affect any sale of Clay School.
Real estate staff told the committee the district’s marketing of surplus school properties has generated substantial online attention and direct contacts from potential buyers and developers.
Staff reported about 304,000 listing impressions across platforms, roughly 2,399 direct inquiries and more than 30 tours conducted to date. The portfolio has drawn attention for a set of priority properties (Scullin, Turner Middle and Branch, Langston and Ford) and Fanning has seen significant tour activity in part because of local alderperson engagement. Staff said one offer on Euclid had been received previously but was no longer active.
The committee also heard a community stewardship request on a small parcel behind Clay School. Deneen Vaughn, who said she and neighborhood partners have tools, volunteers and connections with local nonprofits and developers, requested that the district consider transferring the lot at 1123 Brennan Avenue or otherwise enabling community maintenance and programming. Vaughn described plans for gardening, playground improvements and volunteer maintenance and asked whether the district could transfer or allow stewardship without an upfront purchase price.
Staff replied the district would entertain the request and that any stewardship or sale decision for the lot would be considered separately from the future disposition of the Clay School building. The chair and staff urged safety precautions for site showings and promised the board would evaluate the request.
Separately, demolition‑related contracts for properties on the district list are with legal and are awaiting final touches before on‑site work begins, staff said.
The committee approved routine minutes earlier in the meeting and later voted to adjourn into closed session pursuant to the Revised Statutes of Missouri §610.021; no substantive board action on property sales or transfers was taken in open session.
