Gunnison County emergency managers report Gold Mountain Fire approaching county; mandatory evacuations in zone 32

Emergency Manager Lisa Bickford told the Gunnison County Board on July 7 that the Gold Mountain Fire, which started June 27 in Ouray County, remained largely outside Gunnison County but was expected to grow into the county.
Bickford said containment was around 2% near the Town of Ouray and that mandatory evacuations were in effect for evacuation zone 32; structure protection had begun in that zone. Zone 33 was on voluntary evacuation and patrolled by the Sheriff’s Office to ensure expectations were known. "The fire is expected to continue to grow into Gunnison County," Bickford said.
Assistant County Manager for Public Works Martin Schmidt said crews were on the roads and estimated the fire was about eight miles from the evacuation zones at the time of the briefing. The county is coordinating closely with the Ouray and Montrose Emergency Operations Centers and using InciWeb as the official incident page; emergency notifications will be sent via opt-in landline messages and the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) based on physical location.
Assistant County Manager for Health, Human and Safety Services Joni Reynolds said the Health and Human Services department has masks available for distribution if needed and recommended limiting outdoor exposure while air quality is affected by this and the Ferris Fire.
