The Wauwatosa School Board voted July 20 to approve a preliminary budget for the 2026-27 school year and completed several routine personnel and procedural items.
At a public meeting in Conference Room C of the Pitcher Administration Building, staff presented the required budget format and directed the public to the district’s digital budget book and the recorded budget hearing. Finance staff said the district finished the prior fiscal year better than budgeted and expects to add to fund balance for the first time in several years. Board members and staff emphasized that the preliminary budget will be finalized after the September student-count is certified and that the district’s final budget-setting vote is scheduled for the second meeting in October.
A roll-call vote approved the preliminary budget. The roll call recorded six affirmative votes and one member marked as excused; the motion carried.
During the consent portion of the meeting the board approved several grouped items after removing and discussing a small number of entries. The board later approved consent agenda items e, g and h by roll call; the motion carried.
Personnel actions approved included the hire of Isabella Naughton as assistant director of recreation, with an employment start date of Aug. 3 and an annual salary of $81,000 for 229 days. The board moved and seconded the appointment and approved it by roll call.
The board also designated a subcommittee to review applications for student board representatives. Members discussed the schedule — applications are due Sept. 8 and interviews will be scheduled after that deadline — and designated board member Chris Bauer to serve on the review subcommittee; the motion carried by roll call.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 7:23 p.m., which passed by roll call.
Actions recorded at the meeting include the preliminary budget approval, the hire of the recreation assistant director, the consent votes, the subcommittee designation and the adjournment vote. The district posted the budget hearing materials and expects to place final budget documents on the district website and BoardDocs as they become available.
