Bayfield County sheriff’s office reports staffing gains, counseling for deputies; jail holds 33 inmates

Chief Deputy Andy Runice told the Sheriff’s Committee on May 18 that the Sheriff’s Office is effectively fully staffed: one deputy was sworn in the prior Friday, another is in the academy, and a recently hired sworn officer is on field training. Runice said one deputy is out on injury.
Runice said the department provided free mandatory 50-minute counseling sessions to deputies during the week and that staff have access to an additional four sessions through the employee assistance program. He noted high fuel costs and reported the office purchased a Honda CR-V from Human Services. On jail operations he said the facility held 33 inmates with two boarded in. Runice said he invited Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office to discuss administrative tasks such as billing and serving papers.
Supervisors asked about budget performance; Runice said revenue is underperforming while expense lines are where the county would expect them. Supervisor Larry Fickbohm asked about the number of female deputies; Runice said the office has two female deputies. Runice also noted he had been honored with a Green Bay Packers Protect and Serve Award.
