Bayfield County sheriff’s office reports staffing changes and jail equipment damage from April storm

At the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Committee meeting on April 27, the Sheriff’s Office reported reduced staffing levels but said two new hires are either enrolled in or about to begin recruit school. The office also said it expects to have 8–10 deputies who are EMR-licensed first responders in the near term. The Sheriff Input Committee is still seeking applicants and plans its first meeting in May.
Jail staff member Kleczka provided an operations update: the jail began the day with 32 inmates, including two boarded inmates; staff said one inmate was being boarded out that day and described the jail as fully staffed. Kleczka and Lt. Gwen Daoust attended a recent regional jail administrators meeting in Minocqua and plan to attend another conference in Oshkosh.
Kleczka reported that the jail’s body scanner was harmed during the April 17 thunderstorms. Staff said the jail will need to purchase another Zoom screen for virtual visits and appointments in 2027 to restore that capability.
Committee members did not take formal action on staffing or equipment purchases at the meeting. The Sheriff Input Committee recruitment and planned training for new deputies were listed as near-term operational priorities.
