FGCU athletics reports academic gains, national ranking for swimming and roster moves

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Colin Hargis briefed the Board on Oct. 23, reporting an 18-point year-over-year increase in FGCU’s NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR). Hargis said 11 teams posted a perfect 1,000 during the reporting period and six teams achieved a perfect four-year cohort score, which he described as an indicator of student-athlete eligibility and retention success.
Hargis highlighted competitive successes across multiple sports: women’s soccer led the conference with forward Erika Zschuppe scoring 19 goals and approaching the FGCU single-season record; men’s soccer showed a marked RPI improvement; swimming and diving won early meets and was ranked by Swimcloud among mid-major programs; and men’s and women’s basketball entered the season with optimistic preseason rankings and competitive nonconference schedules. Hargis also noted community engagement efforts, including a Meals of Hope event where student-athletes packaged more than 27,000 meals for Southwest Florida distribution.
Trustee Richard Eide asked whether Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) activity or a prior NCAA sanction had affected recruiting. Hargis said FGCU had no ongoing issues tied to the sanction, recruiting remained positive with recent transfers from larger programs, and athletics staff were prepared to adapt to NIL developments. He also noted head baseball coach Dave Tollett was named to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team coaching staff and that student-athlete Evan Dempsey is expected back in the spring.
Hargis described ongoing efforts to retain student-athletes and to pivot as needed around NIL rules; he characterized the coaching staff as focused on both competition and academic progress.
