Trustees unanimously approved moving forward with the FGCU Employee Housing Project and the associated financing package, allowing the University to proceed with debt issuance planning and submission to the Board of Governors.
Vice President and Executive Director of FGCU Financing Corporation David Vazquez presented the finalized materials for BOG submission, including the Financing Corporation resolution authorizing debt issuance and a draft FGCU BOT resolution approving financing, purchase and project development steps. Trustee Richard Eide emphasized the need for careful oversight because carryforward funds and other financing steps are constrained by statute and contract terms.
Trustees discussed affordability, employee benefit aspects and connections to the Foundation’s pledge to guarantee annual debt service (pending FGCU BOT approval). Trustee Paul Applegarth noted the importance of transparently communicating benefit value to employees and understanding the subsidy levels, while Trustee Derek Lura recommended exploring additional funding sources and staff support for childcare and related employee benefits.
What was approved: the Board authorized the FGCU Employee Housing Project to proceed toward financing and BOG review. Specific bond terms were to be finalized by the Financing Corporation and submitted to the BOG for approval in November.
