FGCU committee approves 2025 Student Success Plan emphasizing recruiting, enrollment and a campuswide care model

The Academic/Student/Faculty Affairs Committee of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved and recommended to the full Board the 2025 Student Success Plan on Sept. 2, 2025.
The plan, presented by Executive Vice President and Provost Debbie Thorne and Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Success & Enrollment Management Paul Dosal, targets six Performance-Based Funding metrics the Board of Governors requires. It emphasizes a university-wide care approach that uses a customer-relationship management platform known as Wings Up to coordinate interventions across advising, financial aid, career services and counseling.
“We are building a 360-degree view of each student so we can coordinate support across offices,” Dr. Dosal said, describing Wings Up’s role in routing faculty referrals and applying predictive analytics and AI tools to identify students in need of timely intervention.
The plan includes specific operational steps: embedding career readiness into curricula to affect Metric 1 (percent of bachelor’s graduates employed or earning $40,000 or more), creating course coordinators to address high DFW (D, F, withdrawal) rates in key general-education courses, and implementing a multi-year enrollment plan to improve match quality between admitted students and program expectations.
Provost Thorne explained the course-coordinator initiative: faculty volunteers receive a modest stipend to align syllabi, share effective teaching practices and enable measurement of successful strategies. “We are seeing results from coordinators already,” she said.
Trustees questioned pacing and targets. Trustee Derek Lura asked whether short-term and long-term goals were realistic; the committee discussed four-year graduation goals (noted in the presentation as 45% current, 51% goal for 2026 and 53% goal for 2030) and the need to combine admissions-side improvements with in‑semester support. Trustee Joseph Fogg said the committee should emphasize recruiting and admissions as well as interventions after enrollment; the motion that approved the plan explicitly highlighted an emphasis on recruiting, enrollment and admissions.
President Aysegul Timur said FGCU would pair internal expertise with external reviews to implement enrollment planning and better align programs with student preparation. The plan also calls for work on Programs of Strategic Emphasis (PSEs) that the State University System determines using Department of Economic Opportunity data.
The committee voted by voice and recorded unanimous “Yea” votes. The item will be presented to the full FGCU Board of Trustees at the Sept. 9 meeting.
