Village board approves $6.7 million contract for new Mountain Bay Metro police building

The Village of Weston Board of Trustees voted to award a $6,700,000 contract to 8 Pine Inc. for the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department building, approving the selection and associated alternates at tonight's meeting.

Village representatives told the board the low construction bid was about $6.39 million and the village set a $6.7 million project budget to cover fiber, lockers and select furniture. The project scope described at the meeting calls for a roughly 26,000-square-foot building with garage space for 13 squad vehicles and room to expand vehicle storage in adverse weather.

An agency representative explained the funding arrangement will be shared between municipalities: roughly 65% of the borrowing will be Weston's responsibility and 35% will be Rothschild's. Weston's portion was described in the packet as approximately $4,000,355. Officials said land acquisition (~$384,000) and design expenses (~$390,000–$395,000) have already been spent from police department budgets and the oversight board will review remaining project expenditures.

Trustees asked about timing and next steps. Staff said an intergovernmental agreement with Rothschild is expected to be finalized in August and, pending that agreement and oversight approvals, the contractor aims to start on site in September. The board heard that leftover project funds overseen by the oversight board would be returned to participating municipalities.

Trustee [motion maker] moved to approve the contract and the board took a roll-call vote; all present trustees voted yes and the motion carried.

The board will continue oversight work through the oversight board and finalize financing details in the coming weeks before signing contracts and authorizing borrowings.
