Eatonville department heads give updates on water treatment, potholes, policing and summer programs

Valerie, public works director, said engineering plans for the water and sewer program are advancing toward 90% design; consultants will present April 21 and the town plans bidding in July with construction starting in October 2026. She also said the town is in appraisal stages for a property acquisition and is coordinating with Orange County, the National Park Service and neighboring municipalities.
On roads, staff said crews will cut out and repair potholes—specific problem stretches on Gabriel and Belair were noted—and that broader resurfacing depends on securing infrastructure funding. The clerk explained that the town implemented a "text my gov" system for residents to report potholes with photo/video evidence.
Police Chief (speaker 7) reported a year-to-date service summary, plans to replace two inoperable vehicles at roughly $23,000, completion of evidence- and CJIS-related audits, and a records-audit and purge process for outdated items.
Recreation (speaker 14) outlined youth and senior programs: Life Cycle Bike Club events, STEM outings, summer feeding programs run in partnership with county schools, and plans to bus children to Catalina-area activities. Council members asked how families will be notified and whether partnerships (for gym space, for example the Boys & Girls Club) can be strengthened.
The clerk (speaker 3) said the records-retention project is about 60% complete with disposition planned by the end of May, that standard operating procedures and an emergency mitigation plan are being developed, and that the Ruth and William Hutt scholarship application (budgeted at $5,000) will be posted for applicants on April 13.
Council members asked for timelines and for staff to return with budget analyses and scheduling details where appropriate.
