.gov domain required as Kearney accepts cyber grants for police systems

The Board of Aldermen unanimously approved three State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) subaward agreements for the Kearney Police Department Feb. 17.
City Administrator Sheila Ernzen told the board that accepting the FY2024 grants from the Missouri Department of Public Safety Office of Homeland Security carries an implementation requirement: the city must transition to a ".gov" domain. Ernzen said a .gov domain provides a higher baseline of security and authentication, reduces phishing risk and strengthens email and system security.
Ernzen advised the board that the migration to a .gov domain is expected to be completed by the end of August 2028. The ordinance approving the subawards was recorded as Ordinance No. 1674-2026.
The board’s action authorizes acceptance of the grants; staff will bring implementation steps and timelines through the appropriate administrative processes.
