Helix School Board approves CM/GC delivery method for Griswold gym seismic work and schedules Dec. 23 special meeting

The Helix School Board voted Dec. 10 to approve the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) delivery method for the Griswold High School main-gym seismic rehabilitation and authorized staff to solicit requests for proposals.

The motion, made by Bobby Corey and seconded by Friday Bracher, carried unanimously among members present (Larry Parker, Friday Bracher and Bobby Corey) with two members absent. Superintendent Brad Bixler told the Board KNCC had finished addendum work and was completing the bidding package; KNCC will present cost estimates and a recommendation at a special board meeting on Dec. 23 if the Board confirms availability.

Board members and staff framed the decision as a procedural step to move design and procurement forward rather than final contract approval. The CM/GC delivery method lets the district select a construction manager early in design to coordinate cost input, schedule phasing and subcontractor bidding. Board discussion focused on timing and next steps rather than contract terms.

The Board scheduled a special meeting for Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Helix School multipurpose room to review bids and accept KNCC's recommendation. If the Board approves a recommendation at the special meeting, contractors could begin onsite work on the Ag Science/Welding shop shortly afterward, staff said.

Next steps identified by staff include KNCC’s formal presentation of estimates at the Dec. 23 meeting and continuation of seismic modeling already under way for the facility.
