Port Authority approves removing commemorative plaques tied to man with criminal history

During the July 20 meeting the Port Authority discussed commemorative plaques on Port property that include the name of a man board members said had committed heinous crimes. The chair said some plaques needed replacement and proposed removing them until the board could replace them with names the community should recognize.
"I really would like to consider removing those plaques until we feel the wherewithal...replace them with the proper names that we want," the chair said, calling the current inscriptions inappropriate. A board member made a motion to proceed; another member seconded. The board approved the motion by voice vote.
Board members noted cost and timing concerns and said the work had been previously tabled because of affordability; they asked staff to bring cost estimates and to proceed when funding allows. No specific replacement names or a procurement schedule were set at the meeting.
The motion passed by voice vote; members agreed staff should return with options and cost estimates before finalizing replacement text and fabrication.
