Board approves 8th‑grade trip to Boise for Future City competition

The Helix School Board on Nov. 19 voted to approve a field trip for the 8th‑grade STEM class to attend the Future City regional competition in Boise, Idaho from Jan. 9–11, 2026.
Ms. Rachel Gavin, the 8th‑grade STEM teacher, described the trip itinerary, said 12 students are interested, and noted the School Board and Booster Club will fund the travel so families will not be charged. Because travel crosses time zones the itinerary will reflect Mountain Time when students arrive in Idaho. Ms. Gavin also said the trip is dependent on roads being passable and would be canceled if weather or road closures prevented safe travel.
The board approved the trip by motion of Friday Bracher, seconded by Bobby Corey; the motion carried (Yea:4, Nay:0, Absent:1). The board’s approval included the waiver process for student image use, and Ms. Gavin indicated she will send parents the required permission and image‑use waiver forms by email. The itinerary includes departure from Helix on Jan. 9 at about noon and return on Jan. 11 in the late afternoon, with hotel stays and a competition day at Boise State scheduled on Jan. 10.
What’s next: Ms. Gavin will collect signed waivers and finalize travel logistics; the trip is conditionally approved and contingent on safe road conditions in January.
